You know you want to revamp your website, but you’re not sure where to begin. Some clients come to us with a fixed idea of what they want, others come with a completely open mind, and many are somewhere in between.
Either way, the first thing most people will do before contacting us is competitor research, and hunt for some inspiration to get the ball rolling. After all, it’s not essential to have any ideas at all - that’s part of our job - but it’s nice to know what’s out there.
But where to start as someone new to all this? We’ve asked Our Pros where they look for inspiration, and the inspiration sites they would recommend to save you time (and frustration). Happy browsing!
Tony - Creative Director: Dribbble
As Creative Director, Tony takes the lead on designing the look and feel of our websites, starting with an idea from the client and a sound understanding of their business. He recommends www.dribbble.com if you’re looking for design inspiration.
This site is technically for designers to share their work with other designers, but this means that the inspiration available is fresh, professional and varied. It’s this which makes it a great place to start looking for the concept which might be the start of your online brand.
Tom - Lead Developer: PatternTap
Tom is usually absorbed in reams of code, but he started out building the front end of websites and has seen more than a few user interfaces in his time. He suggests browsing Zurb’s PatternTap (http://zurb.com/patterntap) to help mould an idea for your website.
It features everything from typography with character to alternative menu designs, and as a place to start, there’s something which will appeal to everyone regardless of your sector or size.
Simon - Usability Specialist: Awwwards
Having built hundreds of websites and specialised in usability, Simon looks for things which make websites really work for users.
When he’s looking for inspiration, he’ll often use and suggest https://www.awwwards.com/, the platform used to showcase the best from the ‘Awwwards’ Website Awards. The great thing about this site is that it allows you to search websites that have won awards by industries, tags and even by colour. For businesses looking to improve their own websites, this is a nifty way to do competitor research with competitors you didn’t even know you had.
Importantly, it doesn’t matter how big or small, or how strict or conceptual your idea is when you come to us. We will do the rest, working with you to ensure we fully understand your business and what you want and need your online presence to do for you. Whatever ideas you have collated, we will help you to understand how that can be made a reality for your brand and budget.
